Languages

At Heycroft Primary School, we prioritize fostering early interest and foundational skills in foreign language acquisition. Our commitment stems from recognizing the benefits of exposing children to a foreign language early on, enhancing their ability to grasp sounds and words effortlessly.

We strive to create a supportive learning environment where all pupils, regardless of ability, feel confident to take risks and view mistakes as valuable learning opportunities. Our approach not only facilitates the acquisition of the initial foreign language but also lays the groundwork for easier learning of additional languages later in life.

Our language curriculum focuses on essential elements such as vocabulary, phonics, grammar, cultural appreciation, and language acquisition skills. Through engaging topics like family, self-presentation, pets, and cultural experiences, students learn French vocabulary. Additionally, Year 3 students explore basic Japanese language, providing an exciting opportunity for cultural immersion.

We believe that learning a foreign language contributes to future economic well-being, excitement, fun, ambition and appreciation for different cultures. The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to be progressive, with students advancing through units of work, complemented by Heycroft-designed revision units. This ensures that language learning evolves with each passing year, promoting continuous growth in knowledge and skills.
